Siemens Mobility: well-being at work in Finland and the Baltics

Collaboration between Siemens Mobility and Wellbeing Superstars by Liikkuva Suomi has motivated 70% of team members, and created a new, encouraging sense of community.

Siemens Mobility invests in the wellbeing of its employees, and during a year of collaboration with Wellbeing Superstars, focus has firmly been on combining everyday wellbeing with work. Coaching has covered topics ranging from brain ergonomics and load management to rest and recovery.

Wellbeing coaching has increased the team’s sense of community. It has encouraged colleagues and frontline staff to talk about wellbeing at work, and to take personal wellbeing actions. When the whole team gets involved, wellbeing becomes a self-generating thing and a team effort.

Wellbeing Superstars’ coaching is based on small everyday changes and decisions. Encouraging others and sharing experiences is an important part of the coaching experience. At Siemens Mobility, special attention has been paid to recovery and sleep, which everyone has been able to monitor with a personal activity bracelet.

Kestutis Ciplys, the head of Siemens' Lithuanian regional office, is interested in monitoring and developing his own wellbeing. Ciplys has been part of the Siemens Mobility steering group during the coaching.

At Siemens Mobility, 70% of those invited to the coaching – a total of 47 team members – participated. Already in the first five months, the team logged more than 24 million steps and cheered colleagues on 4,692 times, according to anonymised data collected by Wellbeing Superstars.

“I'm interested in tracking my wellbeing, and have been monitoring my own data with the activity bracelet for several years now. When I joined the Wellbeing Superstars coaching platform, I felt like I was moving to the next level. I’m particularly motivated by the wellbeing points I accumulate from exercise, encouraging colleagues, sleeping, and wellbeing actions. They encourage me to improve week by week,” says Ciplys.

Frontline workers play an important role in coaching

Ciplys leads by example: “Leading by example is the best way to lead. I do it myself and I expect the same from my the supervisors under me. During the coaching, I was positively surprised by the involvement of the company's management. The managers really led by example; they involved and motivated others and invited colleagues to join them on a joint wellbeing journey.”

The Siemens Mobility steering group says that when talking about wellbeing at work becomes an everyday affair, it is easier to also discuss it in professional meetings. The different wellbeing topics become commonplace, and new positive things can emerge from the discussions.

Ciplys says that the positive influence on team members is also reflected externally. Taking care of yourself helps you cope during busy and stressful times.

Wellbeing at work as part of weekly meetings

Wellbeing coaching has received good feedback from participants. Wellbeing is discussed in weekly meetings.

“We have all liked the fact that coaching has made us pause, and that we have all been ‘forced’ to reflect on our own and our team members’ wellbeing at work. When you're stressed and busy, these important things can easily get pushed to the side,” says Ciplys of the team's experience.

“Most of my colleagues have joined in on the coaching, and have been active in their own lives. This makes me happy. We talk about wellbeing in our weekly meetings and the progress has been very promising. I look forward to continuing in the same direction," Ciplys concludes.
