Siemens Invests in the Wellbeing of Its People

Liikkuva Suomi and Siemens Osakeyhtiö in Finland and the Baltic countries have embarked on an extensive wellbeing journey to build Siemens’ investment in the wellbeing and coping of its workforce, and the Siemens community. Siemens is a pioneer in different technologies, but the more business goals there are, the more it wants to invest in the business engine of today – its people.

“We believe that only healthy and well-balanced professionals can support our customers in major projects, and also meet the challenges of today’s society,” says Janne Öhman, CEO of Siemens Osakeyhtiö, about the importance of wellbeing in business.

Siemens HR Director Heidi Moilanen stresses that the time for magic tricks is over. “We want to support the long-term wellbeing of our people. This is not just a single project, but a core value related to our corporate culture that permeates everything we do. But we need real actions and leadership. It’s great that this journey is not just supported by our management, but driven by our personnel, and everyone has the opportunity to take part.”

Already at the turn of 2020-21, Liikkuva Suomi and Siemens Osakeyhtiö worked together on an extensive six-month pilot during which the change-managed concept of Liikkuva Suomi was tested in Finland and the Baltic countries. “In our concept, we always start with a steering group which plans and guides activities based on the feedback from all personnel. Everyone's voice is heard. No one is left out. Sparring and engaging senior management and middle management are important factors in achieving the desired results,” says Antti Luukkanen, CEO of Liikkuva Suomi.

After the pilot, the implementation of the wellbeing programme throughout the company in Finland and the Baltic countries was carefully sketched out at joint remote meetings. The kick-off was held in early September 2021, and the entire staff had the opportunity to take an energy test that allowed them to understand their main priorities in terms of physical and mental coping. “Knowing where you are with the data makes it easier to plan the next steps. We use technology to open our eyes to where both the individual and the community are right now,” Luukkanen continues.

Ilkka Ahokas, Siemens Product Manager and one of the key people in the collaboration, continues, “Increasing collaboration across our community has been a key part of developing wellbeing at work, which is why we emphasise its importance, and support it. We also see an impact on the business because the best ideas are generated through collaboration. Siemens Osakeyhtiö has several offices in both Finland and the Baltic countries, and we have got to know each other better outside of work. At the same time, we build trust through encounters.”

There is no end date for the collaboration between Liikkuva Suomi and Siemens Osakeyhtiö. The collaboration, and Siemens’ culture of wellbeing, will continue to be developed step by step in the right direction. All the company's personnel in Finland and the Baltic countries are involved, and the next step will be taken in the direction of the management of mental and physical load and recovery. At this point, devices that track the state of the body's battery and heart rate variability are also included. It is up to each participant to decide how much they want to use the device in their daily lives.

“Most companies have people who struggle both mentally and physically, and these exceptional times have not eased the mental side in particular. Liikkuva Suomi brings with it the best tools in the world of coaching and technology, made available for everyone through simple topics and tasks. When these are discussed at team meetings, everyone’s voice is heard. In practice, you only need five minutes a week to think about the topic, so commitment is not a matter of time either. The support of the community and our own team plays a significant role in getting everyone motivated.”

“Siemens is a great example for others – not only in technology but also in investing in people's resilience,” Luukkanen concludes.
